Living Arrangements

Week 1: Garden Route District Municipality (Eden)

Housing

  • Two-person "glamping tent" at Wildspirit Backpackers Lodge
  • Linens included and extra blankets available for rent
  • Shared bathrooms at campsite, including composting and flushing toilets plus indoor and outdoor shower options
  • Study space in lounge in main building
  • Luggage storage and communal locker available
  • Laundry service with fee about one kilometer away
  • Swimming pool
  • Limited free internet inside building
  • Our program partner will accept roommate requests during the pre-departure process. Roommate requests cannot be guaranteed and must be mutual. Each student must request the other student in writing separately. The request must include the PID and first and last name for both students.
  • Housing arrangements are subject to change based on local circumstances without prior notice. No price adjustments are possible.

Meals

  • All meals included during first week
  • Provided meals are completely vegetarian
  • Ingredients sourced from local farmers and cooked using sustainable methods like solar cookers
  • Snacks for sale at tuckshop

Classroom and Computer Access

  • Lecture space in hall within walking distance of student accommodation
  • Benches and mats provided instead of formal desks
  • No computer facilities. Bring your own laptop
  • Wireless access may be intermittent due to local conditions. No refunds or price adjustments are possible.

Transportation

  • Upon arrival students will be met at the George Airport and transported to the accommodation about one hour and 40 minutes away
  • Transportation for all group excursions
  • Rented bus for transportation to town centre for shopping and changing money
  • Shuttle service to local attractions on weekends

Weeks 2 - 3: Cape Town

Housing

  • Double room with shared bathroom at Never @ Home backpackers lodge
  • Shared kitchen space available
  • Communal lounge area
  • 24-hour security
  • Paid laundry service

Meals

  • Breakfast and lunch provided on program days
  • Meat served occasionally but not every day

Classroom and Computer Access

  • Classroom in shared office within short walking distance from accommodation
  • Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and fans included

Transportation

  • Bus transportation provided from Eden to Cape Town

Weeks 4 - 5: West Coast

Housing

  • 3-4 person room with shared bathroom at Khwattu Bush Camp and Goedgedacht Trust, 2-person rooms at Njalo Njalo Safari
  • Study space at nearby conference center or lounge area
  • Internet limited to specific areas
  • Paid laundry service

Meals

  • Three meals provided provided on program days
  • Meat served occasionally but not every day

Transportation

  • Bus transportation provided between camp locations

For Whole Program:

Phones

  • For emergency contact purposes, all students must have a functioning mobile phone during the program. Students will receive advice during the pre-departure and on-site orientations about how to rent or purchase a SIM card or phone that will work in South Africa.
  • The cost of a cell phone is not included in the program fee.

Insurance, Health, and Safety

  • An in-depth orientation will be given on the morning after arrival, including health and safety procedures.
  • Travel insurance provided by Travel Insurance Consultants is included in the program fee.
  • All students must also register for UC travel insurance. This is free coverage, but registration is required prior to departure.
