He teaches courses on everyday life under authoritarian rule, Islam and immigration in contemporary Europe, Americanization and anti-Americanism, law and religion, and the international law of war crimes and genocide. He received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan, a J.D. from the University of Virginia, and an A.B. in Religion from Princeton University.
ACADEMIC FOCUS
- HUM 3GS: Renaissance, Reformation, and Early Modern Europe (PDF)
- HITO 156GS: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the US and Europe: Multiple Multiculturalisms (PDF)
London is a site of extraordinary cultural and historical importance for the three key periods and themes of Humanities 3: the Renaissance, the Reformation, and Early Modern Europe. Several of the required texts for the Humanities course arise from the work of English writers during the course period (Shakespeare, Thomas More, Francis Bacon, John Milton). The second course will set the American record against European approaches to multiculturalism and DEI policies, which are often quite different. Britain's history and contemporary experience — and in particular, the record of life in a vividly and often controversial multicultural London — will occupy a prominent place in our discussions and in the course assignments. Studying these events in London will afford students an unparalleled opportunity to explore historical and contemporary events where they actually occurred. To engage with this material in situ will provide students with a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience history coming alive as a subject.
WHO SHOULD GO
Revelle College students can fulfill Humanities requirements through this program. HITO 156GS may count toward the History major and minor. This Global Seminar has been approved to fulfill the DEI requirement. Consult your academic advisor to determine officially how the courses will apply to your graduation requirements.
